In 1857, Alstyne graduated from Princeton and in 1860 from Princeton Theological Seminary. He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1860 and began his career in Plattsburg in 1864. In May of 1864, he became pastor at the Clinton Presbyterian Church(NJ)where he met his future wife, Caroline Taylor; they were married June 14,1866 at "Willow Hall." In 1868 he/they went to Long Valley (German Valley)and in 1874 to Roselle Presbyterian
Church where he was minister until his retirement in 1911. He received his Doctorate of Divinity Degree in 1893. He was the Moderator of the Synod of New Jersey in 1906. When he died, he was the oldest living graduate of Princeton University. Buried with him are his wife and 3 of his children.
