For unknown reasons (probably too old) he was not allowed to join the military during World War 1 but was allowed to go to France after the War to help with the war effort. He served overseas as a hut secretary from December 7, 1918 until his death. He was attached to the 303rd. Engineers of the American Expeditionary Force and died there of pneumonia at 9:45 PM on 20 Jan 1919 at the office camp hospital no. 65 at Semur, Cote d-or, France. He is buried in Grave #5, Row 26, Block B. Cemetery Street in the Saint Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, Meurthe-et-Moselle, France which is 25 miles S.W. of Metz.
