Robert Lloyd "Bob" Boutilier
Robert 'Bob' Lloyd Boutilier, 88, of Edmond, OK passed away February 16, 2004 at Bryant Nursing Center. Prior to moving to Edmond, Robert lived in Midwest City for over forty years.
Robert was born October 10, 1915, in Everett, Massachusetts, to Maxwell A. and Caroline M. (Dowden) Boutilier.
Robert served in the Army Air Corp and then in the Air Force, both active and reserve status, where be retired as a Lt. Colonel. He met the love of his life, Elizabeth Jane 'Betty' (Davis) while assigned to Fort Banks in Winthrop, MA. Betty and Bob married December 15, 1941. They celebrated 43 years of marriage before Betty's death in 1984.
Robert was stationed three times in Oklahoma, the first time at Vance AFB, Enid, OK and twice at Tinker AFB in Midwest City. Betty and Bob fell in love with Okahoma and upon his leaving active duty in 1961, they made Oklahoma their home where he then served in the Civil Service for 15 years.
He loved following Red Sox baseball and as a young man spent many a day at Fenway Park in Boston. However, his greatest love was music. He especially enjoyed playing his piano and organ and singing. Robert's music brought joy to his family and friends. He also played throughout the '60s and '70s at several of the clubs/restaurants in Oklahoma City, Midwest City and Norman. Although he no longer could play the piano, he loved to listen to his radio and would sing with anyone that could keep up.
Robert had another great love in his life and that was his family. Robert and Betty were adopted by their daughter Carolyn 'Karen' Ann Triplett in 1943. As Karen grew up, it didn't take long to realize her Dad was absolutely perfect. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix, make, rescue or even cook. When her daughter, Cynthia 'Cyndie' (Gregson) Bohannan and son, Ronald 'Ron' Lee Boutilier needed a male figure to guide them, he was right there. They adored him and soon were calling him Daddy.
Twelve years later Robert's third grandchild, Sarah Elizabeth (Tarkington) VanOven, was born and 'named' him 'Paa' a name that was quickly picked up by all of her friends, and a few years later by his two great granddaughters, Nicole Amanda Brannen and Samantha Ariel Brannen. Nicole and Samantha adored their 'Paa' and quickly learned that if they wanted to sleep in a little longer and miss the bus, it was okay because Paa would come get them and take them to school.
Robert was loved and will be missed by his daughter, Karen, and son in law, John W. Triplett of Oklahoma City, OK; granddaughter, Cyndie and her husband, Vance Bohannan of Midwest City, OK; grandson Ron Boutilier of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughter, Sarah VanOven of Edmond, OK; great granddaughters, Nicole and Samantha Brannen of Midwest City. Robert is also survived by his stepsister, Helen Larson, S. Yarmouth, MA. His sister, Lenore Boutilier of Edmond, OK formerly of Gloucester, MA, preceded him in death.
During the last few years of Robert's life he had a wonderful friend and sitter, Billie Ruble. We all felt she was an angel that went by the name of Billie. Robert's family also wants to express a tremendous thank you to the many people that took care of him these past four years. He truly enjoyed his time at Jefferson's Garden Assisted Living and then quickly adjusted to his life at Bryant Nursing Center.
We always knew he was well taken care of at Bryant and he expressed his happiness at being there even though he said he thought perhaps he didn't always show it to the staff. Also, a great deal of gratitude and thanks to Hospice Center for their loving care of Robert through this very long journey.
Robert received a wonderful compliment from his former son in law, N. Dale Talkington, when Dale dedicated his book, 'The Long Blue Line' to Robert. The dedication exemplifies the feeling that many people had about Robert Lloyd Boutilier. It read: 'Bob was indirectly the real reason that I became interested in the Union Soldiers Cemetery (now the Oklahoma Veterans Cemetery)...Bob has been a good friend and neighbor of my family for many years. He is an excellent role model for our young people and a real credit to this country. He is truly An Officer and A Gentleman.'
