‎ ‎ ‎ The community lost a favored man May 15th in the death of Richard James Balam. Richard, who suffered from strokes and a weak heart, died in a tragic car accident that Wednesday.
‎ ‎ ‎ Richard was born on January 14th, 1936 in Oroville, WA.
‎ ‎ ‎ After graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, and soon after married Bonnie Jean Grimmett, his lifelong love on November 12th, 1953 in Spokane, WA. While in the Navy, he and his family traveled a lot. He served two tours in Vietnam With distinction and retired with Honors as a medical technician in 1974.
‎ ‎ ‎ He and Bonnie then set up permanent residence in Spokane and remained there the rest of their days. After his Navy career, he was hired by General Electric as an X-Ray Technician, and worked for them for 16 years. He retired four years ago.
‎ ‎ ‎ He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, who passed away August 2, 1998, to cancer; one son, Richard James Balam, Jr. in 1957. Survivors include his brothers, Daniel and Robert; four daughters, Virginia Lynn Neumiller, Debra Kaye Wilson, Linda Jean Hoesch, and Lois Mane Marston; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, with countless cousins, nieces and nephews.
‎ ‎ ‎ Pastor Edwin Marston III will officiate at the graveside service, With full military honors. Interment will be at the Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 S. Cheney-Spokane Rd. on Saturday, June 1. 2002 at 1 P. M.
