In 1909 he married Gesina Schurmann and they were blessed with one son, Herman John, (1911-2001). Gesina died of typhoid fever on August 4, 1913.
On March 11, 1915, John married Lena Johanna Buss of Bluehill, Nebraska. They were blessed with 4 children; Jacob Raymond (1916-2003 ), Johanna Marie (1918-2007 ), Willis Frederick (1920-1942) and George Edward (1922).
John and Lena farmed and raised their family just west of Hildreth. All of their children attended the Hildreth school. After they retired they moved into a modest home in town. John turned the farm operation over to his eldest son, Herman, but continued to play an active part in it's operation. He was still driving the combine during wheat harvest when he was 83 years old.
After Lena's death in 1971, John continued to remain active and walked daily to the farm and could often be seen riding his large tricycle down the road. When it became difficult for him to live alone he moved to the Franklin Senior Citizens' Home. John lived to the age of 104, he passed away on April 6, 1989. That same year the remains of his son, Willis, who had died near Rabaul, New Britain were brought home. They rest side by side at the St. Peters Lutheran Cemetery.
