89, of Britton, died Thursday, February 22, 2007, at Herrick Medical Center in Tecumseh. John was born on July 10, 1917, in Archibold, OH, the son of John Check Sr. and Filomena (Fojtik) Check. He married Helen Studnicka on February 17, 1947. John was employed with Tecumseh Products Company for 32 years retiring in the mid-1970s. He was also in the United States Army and served in World War II. John was a lifetime member of the Tecumseh American Legion, Post #34. He owned his own TV and radio repair shop and loved fishing and gardening. He loved to play his accordion and was part of a few polka bands in years past playing at weddings and other events. John dearly loved being a grandpa and great grandpa. John is survived by his wife Helen; one daughter, Joan (Tom) Smetka of Milan; a son, Gary (Denise) Check of Horton, MI; five grandchildren, Rochelle (Mike) Cullip, Traci Smetka, Nicole (Matt) Voorhees, Elaine Check and Sarah (Brant) Horne; five great grandchildren, Rhi and Charlotte Cullip, Jadyn and Raegan Horne, and Jonathan Voorhees. His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 27, 2007 and 11:00 a.m. at Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Burial will follow at Ridgeway Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Handler Funeral Homes, Tecumseh. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Herrick Medical Center and Tecumseh Dialysis Center. Friends may offer condolences to the family at www.handlerfuneral homes.com.
