During his life he was a farmer, a machinist at a cotton gin, and worked as a mechanic on the train called "Dummy" which went into service in 1901 and ran for 30 years.
My grandmother had this obituary from The Atlanta Journal, issue of 12 Nov 1934:
Mr J O Burks, age 65, died suddenly this morning at Forest Park GA. He is survived by his wife, three sons, V C, M O, and J D Burks: five daughters, Mrs Willie DODD, Mrs R V Laney, Mrs C E Foster, Mrs Hubert HOLT and Mrs Odel Walden. Funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from Forrest Grove Chdurch. Rev Charles Hett(?) will officiate. Interment, Forrest Grove Cemetery. Howard L Carmichael.
