Painter. He was a British watercolorist and oil painter, creating mainly landscapes. Born Herbert Edwin Pelham Hughes-Stanton, into a family of artists, his father and a brother were painters. His first paintings were exhibited in 1886. This followed with exhibits at the Paris Salon, where he received Gold Medals in 1907 and 1908. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1897, Grosvenor Gallery from 1887, the New Gallery, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Fine Art Society. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in November of 1913 and a full member by 1920. He joined the Royal Watercolor Society in 1909 and was president of the society from 1920 until 1936. He was an Officier l'ordre Leopold II, a medal at the third position in the hierarchy of national orders awarded in Belgium. For his contributions to the arts, he was Knighted in 1923. Besides his exhibitions in England, his paintings can be found in museums in Europe, Australia, and South America. In 2020 his painting "The Valley" sold at an auction house for about $3,000. He married and had three daughters and a son, Blair Rowlands Hughes-Stanton, who is a major figure in the art of 20th century wood carvings.
