Mr. Bates, husband of Retha Lawson Bates, died Tuesday, October 19, 2004. Born in Orangeburg, he was the son of Evelyn Y. Bates of St. Matthews, and the late Leroy Bates. Mr. Bates served in the Marines and was an employee of Boral Brick, Inc.
Surviving, besides his wife and mother, are daughters and son-in-law,Jewel and Fred Berry of Lexington, Kimberly Vinning of West Columbia;sons and daughter-in-law, Steve Medlin, Tim and Elizabeth Brazell, all of West Columbia, Ty Brazell of Lexington; four sisters; and eight grandchildren.
