Fairport: June 26, 2007, suddenly Katie was taken from our side along with 4 of her wonderful friends. She and her friends will forever be missed in our lives.
She is survived by parents, Stephanie & Patrick Shirley of Fairport; grandmother, Mary Maggio of Gates; aunts and uncles, Sandra & Richard Monahan, Madonna Shirley, Frank Maggio and Lisa Cavellaro, Peter & Maureen Jones; cousin, Thomas & Evan Monahan and Liam, Guinevere & Aidan Jones; many great aunts and uncles, along with many loving members of her extended family and large circle of caring friends.
Calling hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 2-6 PM at Falvo Funeral Home, 1295 Nine Mile Point Road (Rte. 250 North of Plank). On Monday, relatives and friends will meet at St. John of Rochester Church (8 Wickford Way) for her Memorial Mass at 11 AM. Interment, private. Please omit flowers.
Katherine "Katie" Shirley: Father says teen 'ready to take off'
The parents of Katherine "Katie" Shirley say their daughter's motto was "live, laugh and love." They remember her as an outgoing person who adored her friends and dreamed of being a princess.
Katie's bedroom was covered with hundreds of photos, and she leaves behind intricately decorated scrapbooks, including a recent one with pictures from her prom and "Decision Day" at Fairport High School, when students share the colleges they plan to attend.
In the photos, Katie wore a shirt from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa.
Her parents say Katie had considered careers in teaching or advertising and they had been pleased that she chose a liberal arts college where she would have a lot of options. "She was ready to take off," said her father, Patrick Shirley.
Katie attended Fairport schools from kindergarten to 12th grade. A highlight of her senior year had been a class trip to Washington, during which she toured the White House and spoke to members of Congress. As part of a leadership class, Katie had worked on a project on Social Security, outlining the problems and discussing ways to improve it for her generation.
She also was active in service clubs at school. "She just cared about people," said her mother, Stephanie Shirley.
Katie has been a Pop Warner cheerleader and played field hockey in junior high. In high school, she kept the statistics for the Fairport boys lacrosse team and enjoyed attending other athletic events.
Katie's MySpace page on the Internet says she loved people who made her laugh, the color pink and ice cream.
For fun, she spent time with her close-knit group of friends, four of whom died with her in Tuesday night's car accident.
Katie's house, on a quiet cul-de-sac in Perinton, was filled Wednesday with mourning friends and relatives. Her parents recalled the smile and quirky sense of humor of their only child. "She tried to keep people happy," her father said.
