Amanda Jane Taylor was born 4 Nov. 1857 in Carter County, TN. She was the second child born to John Richard Taylor and Sarah Jane Forrester Taylor. Her siblings were:

The family moved to Pumpkin Valley, near Eidson, Hawkins County, TN in the late 1850s. On 15 Mar. 1864 her US Army soldier father was killed during the Battle of Nashville during the Civil War. On 11 June 1865, her mother was remarried to William J. Price, also a former US Army soldier during the Civil War. To this new union six additional children were born beginning in 1867. Amanda and her three siblings were placed under court-approved guardianship in May 1866 in order to receive their late father's military pension due to their mother's remarriage to a US Army veteran.
At the age of almost twelve years old she married Henry Kane Carter on October 17, 1869 in Hawkins County, TN. They lived on his small farm in Pumpkin Valley that bordered the Sizemore farm and was later incorporated into it. They were members of the Beech Hill Primitive Baptist Church in the Hancock County section of Pumpkin Valley and he became a deacon there. To their union three children were born:

On 8 May 1882, Henry Kane Carter died at the age of thirty after an illness of two months leaving Amanda and three young children to fend for themselves.
In a couple of years after Henry's death, she met Ernest Fain of Rogersville, TN, a former Confederate soldier whose family had previously been somewhat properous in banking and business in Rogersville. After the Civil War, Ernest's family fortunes declined drastically due to their support of the Confederacy and being former slaveholders. Ernest had to learn to be a farmer to survive. They were married 23 Feb. 1885 in Hawkins County, TN and resided on her farm in Pumpkin Valley. To this marriage, Amanda and Ernest added three more children:
Nora Elizabeth Fain (b. Feb. 1886, d. 8 Nov. 1959) (m. John Bowen),
Alvin Fain (b. 22 Nov. 1887, d. 27 Apr. 1968) (m. Della Price),

Around 1900, Ernest left Amanda and moved back in with his first wife leaving Amanda once again to provide support for multiple children. By about 1918 the children were adults and moved away and Ernest had died but then her oldest son Cicero and wife had died in Willow Shoals, KY and Amanda then began raising their two young children to adulthood: Lincoln C. and Callie Mae Carter. Callie Mae Carter Darnell is still alive at 100 years old in 2011 and remembered her as being a very quiet person who kept to herself a lot.
After all of the children had moved on, she was now getting old and she moved in with her son Alvin Fain and his wife Della who lived near Rogersville, TN, where she lived the last 15 or so years of her life until her death on 2 July 1942 from heart problems. She was well thought of by all of her family as a kind and persevering woman who overcame a lot of obstacles in her long life.
