John J. Zimmerman Jr., 78, of Syracuse , died at Francis House on June 18, 2007. A 1951 graduate of Cornell University, he was commissioned in the Air Force, reaching the rank of captain. He greatly enjoyed running the officers' clubs and military hotels around the world. After returning home in 1953, he led a diverse and interesting life in sales and real estate investments. In the 1980s, he started Real Estate Investors of Central New York and served as its president and mentor for the remainder of his life. He loved to fly, joined the Civil Air Patrol as a boy and obtained his pilot's license by 18. He also loved to cook for a crowd. He started working in his father's restaurant (Zimmerman's Restaurant) as a boy and was always happy in the kitchen, serving friends and family through the years. An avid traveler, he began his international journeys during college internships. He was a member of St. Stephen's Church, was active in the Patriot League and served on the board of directors of Emily's Foundation.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn Zimmerman; his children, Patty (Mike) Powers of Virginia, Rob (Allison) of Guam, John (Linda) of West Virginia and Eric (Carol) of Maryland; his sister, Jeanne Cortese (Marv) Bottrill of Syracuse ; and 15 grandchildren.
Funeral Services: 9:45 a.m. Thursday, June 28, 2007, at Hollis Funeral Home and 10:30 a.m. in St. Stephen's Church. Calling Hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hollis Funeral Home. Burial with honors will be in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Syracuse .
