Union Civil War veteran. Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry. This headstone was cleaned in 2007 under the direction of Eagle Scout candidate Jesse Friedow with help from the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

He was born in VA and enlisted on 24 Jun 1863 from his home in Moravia, Iowa.
He was taken prisoner on 30 Jul 1864 at Newnan, Coweta County, GA [this was a classic battle where many men of the 8th Iowa were captured] and discharged on 5 Jun 1865 at Clinton, IA.

He was married to Amanda E. Johnson (1850-1936).

He filed a claim for an invalid pension (#1104671) on 8 Apr 1892.
His widow also filed a claim for a pension (#771303).
