Arabella M. Hammonds married February 20, 1868 in Giles County, Tennessee to Oliver Appleton. Her parents were Albert and Sabrey S. (Appleton) Hammonds. Arabella's obituary found in a Lawrence County, Tennessee, newspaper read "News reached here Christmas Day, of the death of Mrs. Arabelle Appleton at Mansfield, Texas. She was found sitting in a chair that morning and life extinct. She was in her 82nd year and had been living in Texas for about 40 years. Mrs. Appleton was the sister of Mrs. G. W. (Dink) Hagan and visited her less than two years ago. She was the wife of Oliver Appleton, who went from the southern part of Giles County, Tennessee to Texas about 40 years ago. She was Mrs. Arabelle Hammonds before her marriage to Mr. Appleton. She leaves two children, Albert and Chalmers of Texas and Oklahoma and several grandchildren besides her sister, Mrs. Hagan. She was also an aunt of A. Hammonds of Columbia and Cecil Hammonds of Peach. The readers of "The News" in the southeastern part of Giles County will remember Mrs. Appleton and regret her passing. The 1900 census of Texas list Oliver and Arabella as being married 33 years, parents of seven children, only three living. Arabelle drew Oliver's Confederate pension. It list the date of her death as December 24, 1829. Her son J. A. Appleton is also mentioned in this pension and that Arabella was born at Lexington, Alabama. Marriage is listed as February 20, 1867. Arabella's death certificate proved her mother was an Appleton. Informant on death certificate was her son, J. A. Appleton.
