Lloyd E. Ayers, 87, Bedford

Thursday, May 17, 2007 2:26 PM EDT

On Sunday, May 13, at the age of eighty-seven, Lloyd Edward Ayers peacefully went to meet his Savior. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moses Pete Ayers and Ollie Jane Overstreet Ayers, as well as brothers Kyle Henry Ayers, Russell James Ayers, Carlton Odell Ayers, Elmo Hume Ayers, sister, Evelyn Ayers Walker, and former son-in-law, Lt. Elmer Mason Nance. He is survived by his wife, Hilda Updike Ayers, who is a resident of Campbell's Rest Home.

In their sixty-five years of marriage, Lloyd and Hilda were the parents of
one daughter, Janice Lee Ayers DeLong of Forest, Virginia and a
son-of-their-hearts from the age of twelve, Joseph William Smith of Benson, North Carolina. Lloyd was blessed to have a devoted son-in-law for the past thirty-six years, Robert Edward DeLong who cared for him as he would have his own father, and a loving daughter-in-law, Barbara Ann Smith who was as attentive as possible from a state away.

Grandchildren who mourn his passing are Kimberly Beth DeLong of Richmond, Michael Anthony DeLong of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Lynne DeLong Goodwin and her husband, Brian of Fairfax; Kara Susanne Byrne and her husband, Collin of Lynchburg; Joseph, Jr. and Jennifer Smith, Mitchell and April Womack with their small children, Novie and Noah all residents of North Carolina. Lloyd was also surrounded by the love of his surviving brother, Alonzo Preston "Tom" Ayers and his wife Dolores; Costeline Ayers Turner and her husband Ray; and Jane Ayers Hale and her husband, Goggin; and sister-in-law, Hazel Collins Ayers all of Bedford City and County. Surviving also and faithful to meet his needs are brother-in-law, Warren Holmes Updike and sister-in-law, Elsie Updike (Gibbs) Gillespie. Living far away but trying to stay in touch
is sister-in-law Kathryn Schroeder and her husband, Bill. Lloyd will be
missed by numerous nieces and nephews across several states.

Born on September 18, 1919, Lloyd devoted his life to the service of his
church, his community, and his country. An almost lifetime member of Quaker Baptist Church, Lloyd spent many years as a leader of the Royal Ambassadors, often taking his summer vacations to work as a camp counselor. He also served as deacon and held other offices in the Quaker body of Christ. He touched the lives of many with his dedication and strong opinions as to how the business of the Lord should be managed.

In the community, Lloyd was active in service, whether in providing a place for recreation or in opposition to the sale of alcoholic beverages in public places. He and his wife, Hilda, opened the space behind their house for horse shows, and later for many long summer evenings of competition softball. It was their desire to offer wholesome recreation for young and old alike. During the years of operating a grocery store, Lloyd and Hilda also hosted neighborhood gatherings of country music makers, providing pleasure for all in attendance.

Serving four years in the United States Army both stateside and in Europe, Lloyd was a survivor of the second wave of the Normandy Invasion. For many years during the 1990s and early 2000s he met annually with former service buddies in several states and reminisced with war stories. He was still in communication with some of these friends within months of his passing.

Since the year 2000, Lloyd and Hilda have been living in separate facilities because of differing physical needs which neither could provide for the other. The family wishes to publicly thank the staff of the Elks National Home, and the nurses and doctors in Special Care for their devotion, compassion, and wisdom in caring for this very special man. Not always patient, Lloyd was appreciative of attention and received love as it was given, and it was lavished by the Elks Home employees, from administration to maintenance.

Those who knew Lloyd, whether briefly or for a lifetime, will remember how he loved a good story. It is with praise and thanksgiving that his fami
confidently declares that he is now enjoying the Greatest Story Ever Told.

A memorial service will be held at Quaker Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 16, at 11 a.m. Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post # 16, will follow in the church cemetery.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to
Gideon's International for the distribution of Bibles across the world, or
to the Moneta Rescue Squad for the benefit of the community.
