Delphia Hamlin Berger entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at her home. She was born on July 11, 1919, in Southampton County, Va., to the late Mayo and Poshie Edmunds Hamlin. She confessed Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and joined Christian Union United Church of Christ, Newport News, and later in life she became a member of Greater Walters AME Zion Church, Newport News, where she served as a faithful member of the senior usher board. Delphia was the matriarch of both her family and her neighborhood. Cooking was her passion and she cooked for everyone to enjoy and for anyone that was in need. Her homemade rolls were always on the plate. She has a special love and affection for her family, her church family and Pastors, Rev. Dr. E.M. Wilson and Rev. Dr. Kenneth W. Arrington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton Berger; four brothers: Rudolph, Charles, James, and William (Billy); two sisters, Nettie Skipwith and Portia Matthews. Her loving and precious memories will always remain in the hearts of her devoted and caring daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Columbus Savage; brother-in-law, Thomas Skipwith, Sr.; loving sister-in-law and friend, Costello Hamlin; a host of nieces, nephews, her late husband's niece, Betty Newby (Delmar), friends, family and special friend, Robert Wells. Funeral service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 31, 2007, at Greater Walters AME Zion Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and two hours prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Arrangements are O. H. Smith and Son Funeral Home.
