Arnold Cemetery. We visited the cemetery in 1992. We followed a dusty gravel road that began the second road to the right upon leaving the Tyler Bend Visitor Center toward Marshall. Luther Arnold, son of John Arnold reportedly sold the family land to the U.S. Federal Government for the Park.
The graves were basically arranged in family groups. Many were marked with river stone and some of the older ones had stones stacked on top of the graves for protection from animals. The children's graves had sandstone carved in the shape of little caskets on top of the pile of stones. It wasn't an especially pretty site, but was well maintained. There were Arnolds, Deans, and about five other family groups. We didn't find Eleazer and Elizabeth Dean, but decided that they could very well be there in unmarked graves, because their daughter Martha Elizabeth and husband William Arnold were buried here and they reportedly farmed the old Dean farm.William Arnold's stones stood out among the others. This is the grave of Martha Elizabeth Dean Arnold as seen in 1992. The headstone had fallen over and was being held up by my wife. Scratched into the headstone was the inscription as best as we could read it: Elizabeth Arnold, Borned ____ 1824, Died July 23, 1878. There was a verse that was illegible and then a name and date near the bottom of the stone: Andrew 1880
