Doreen Margaret Marshall was 21 years old and in Bournemouth, England to recover from flu. She agreed to have tea with Neville Heath that afternoon. They parted after tea but agreed to meet for dinner. They dined together at the Tollard Royal Hotel and, about 11:30 pm, Doreen left to walk the short distance to her hotel accompanied by Heath.

It is understood from the forensic evidence--that Heath subjected Miss Marshall to an horrific attack. She fought back unsuccessfully.

Heath was hanged at Pentonville Prison on 26th October 1946. He was found guilty of the murder of Margery Gardner, murdered earlier in the year. He wasn't charged with Doreen's murder.

Much evidence incriminating him--in the murders of the two women were found in his possession.

The inscription on Doreen's grave reads:
In treasured memory of Doreen Margaret Marshall, died 4th July 1946: she is just away...
