Martha Kilfoyle was born in 1841 in Ontario, Canada to James Kilfoyle and Jane Lucas Kilfoyle. She was the seventh of nine children. Her family joined the LDS church and immigrated to Nauvoo, Illinois in 1846. After leaving Nauvoo they remained in Council Bluffs, Iowa until 1853. Martha was twelve years old when her mother died in Iowa in 1853. Her father remarried shortly after and continued their westward trip to Salt Lake Valley, arriving in 1853.
Martha's sister, Caroline, married George G. Snyder in 1856. Caroline convinced the family to take Martha into their home as she had been ill and Caroline wanted to care for her. A few months later, Martha was also married to George Snyder as his 4th wife. She was sixteen years old at the time.
Over the next seven years, Martha had three children. In 1865, Martha died as a result of Scarlet Fever. She was just 23 years old at the time and had three young children, the youngest just two years old. Her children were Louis, Nellie and Willard. The children were cared for by her sister.
