Married Angelina E. Tansey, daughter of Jesse and Polly (Carter) Tansey on 6 October 1858 in Morgan County, Indiana.

David enlisted as a private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry, Union Army on August 11, 1862 in the American Civil. At the time he enlisted, he was Living in Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana. His unit was charged with guarding the railroad line around Memphis, Tennessee. He became Ill and died from chronic diarrhea on June 2, 1863, in Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee.
