James Urless was the son of James Monroe And Ada Aline (Sexton) Connis. James had an older sister, named Ethel M. Connis (Born Feb. 1898). The family's original name was McGugan and was changed to Connis by James Monroe in 1899. James Urless served in the US Army cavalry during World War I and was stationed in Texas. On June 24, 1922, James married Frances Elizabeth Digges in Poplar Bluff. After their marriage, they moved to Searcy, Arkansas. In 1926, they moved back to Poplar Bluff. During their marriage they had 3 children:

James served 25 years as a Manager of Kroger stores in Poplar Bluff, Sikeston, Doniphan, Chaffee and Cape Girardeau in Missouri. He also served on the Poplar Bluff police force and was elected Chief of Police. James and Francis retired in Poplar Bluff and remained there until their deaths.
