John's family migrated from NY to IN; he left the family home in 1848 and located in Knox Co IL where he was a wagon maker for 4 years; moved to Black Hawk Co 1852 where he built a 14'x14' log cabin and lived the first winter in it with a dirt floor; there was no habitation West of him at that time; he owned a farm of 192 acres outside of Waterloo; he was formerly an old-line Whig and then became a Republican; held the offices of Township Trustee for 4 years, Road Supervisor for 2 years, and School Director for 2 years; member of United Brethren Church.
