Born Charles Washington Barnes to Jonathan Barnes and Ancaret Barnes, nee Berry. A brother, Henry L Barnes, is also buried in Methodist Cemetery. Although the headstone indicates Charles was born in 1822, census records indicate he was born in 1828. His DC death notice has 1825 as his date of birth. DC records show that Charles married Margaret A Payne, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Payne, on July 9,1856 in DC. Margaret was born in DC around 1838 and died in DC on January 23, 1918. DC death record shows she was also buried in the Methodist Cemetery, likely close to Charles. No records found of any children born to Charles and Margaret. Margaret's parents are also buried in the Methodist Cemetery. Her father, Joseph Payne, died 1-7-1877 and her mother, Margaret Payne, died 9-14-1882 and her DC death record shows that she was buried in the Methodist Cemetery. Margaret's older sister, Sarah Ann Payne (married name Riley) is also buried in the Methodist Cemetery.
