HANER Jr., 19, of the Green Creek section of Middle Township, who died Tuesday as a result of injuries sustained in a Middle Township automobile accident on Route 47. He was a cashier for Wawa and a member of the Green Creek Fire Co. Mr. Haner was a 1992 graduate of Middle Township High School and the Cape May County Alternative School. He was born in Stockton, Calif., and lived in Cape May County all his life. He is survived by his parents, Raymond S. Sr. and Sandra of Green Creek; a brother, Louis F. of South Dennis; two sisters, Kathleen H. Loeffler and Betty Ann Walsh, both of Wildwood Crest; and his maternal grandmother, Vera Johnson of Wildwood Crest. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the Radzieta Funeral Home, Cape May Court House, where friends may call from 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Cold Spring. *Shock and sadness met members of the Green Creek Volunteer Fire Company Tuesday as they responded to a crash on Route 47 and found their fellow firefighter dead and trapped in his mangled vehicle.
Police are unsure why Raymond Haner Jr., 19, of Green Creek, who was traveling southbound on Route 47, crossed into the northbound lane of the road at a curve near milepost 5.5. around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Haner, who had been a member of the fire company since august, was killed instantly when his car collided with a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Carl J. Hess Jr., also of Green Creek. Hess was airlifted to Atlantic City Medical Center, where he remained in stable condition late Wednesday afternoon.
Richard Barnett, president of the fire company, said about 15 of the station's firefighters responded to the scene of the crash - in front of the Wildwood Water Utility's pumping station in Rio Grande.
Following the crash, Green Creek firefighters were met at the station by the Critical Incident Stress Team, a counseling unit based in Atlantic City.
The unit is comprised of firefighters and policeman specially trained to counsel emergency workers.
Barnett said firefighters are dealing with the tragedy "as best as they can."
On Wednesday, firefighters described Haner as a man who "could take a joke and liked to joke back".
"He was a nice young man and a good firefighter," said Barnett, who knew Haner for 13 years.
Firefighter John Henry said although Haner was fairly new at the station, he was a quick learner.
"We'll miss him," Henry said.
There was no alcohol involved in the incident and neither man was wearing a seatbelt, according to Patrolman Howard Oliver.
There were no witnesses to the accident and Oliver said it may never be known why Haner's car crossed into the northbound lane. Tuesday's accident was the second fatality in front of the pumping station in six months and officials have described the curve at which the collision occurred as dangerous. "Everybody's pretty shaken up over the whole thing," he said.
Haner's casket will be transported to the cemetery on a fire truck, pending weather conditions, Barnett said.
Police have not determined how fast Haner and Hess were traveling when their vehicles collided.
