Daniel was the second child born to Josiah and Melinda (Cowgill) Mathers in LaPorte Co., IN. His family moved to Missouri and stayed with his maternal grandfather while his father fought during the civil war. The family then moved back to Indiana until 1870 when they moved to Cass Co., NE. In 1874 his father homesteaded in Kearney Co., NE. His mother died after moving to NE in 1874.

Daniel married Mary Estella Ragan on Oct. 8, 1881. The family moved to Lincoln Co., NE in 1910.
He was preceded in death by his father, 2 brothers and an infant sister, also a son, Charles, whom died in France during WWI.

Surviving him are his sons, Thomas, Grover, Martin, Michael and Clarence, his daughters, Mae, Agnes, Rose, Grace, and Ida.
His brothers, John, and Joe, jr. and sisters, Lucinda and Susan.
