U.S. Congressman. While attending Milton College, he left to enter the Union Army and served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 24th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War. After the war, he graduated from the law department of the University of Michigan, in 1867, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Boone, Iowa, in 1868. He was Mayor Boone, (1880-810 and a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1882-83). In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth, Forty-ninth, and Fiftieth Congresses, serving until 1889. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he was Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives in the Fifty-first Congress, served as Boone County Attorney, (1896-99) and practiced law until his death.
