Civil War Confederate Army Officer. Joined the Missouri State Guard as a Private in April 1861, and was promoted through the ranks from Sergeant to Captain. In June 1862 he was serving as Captain and commander of Company E, 6th Missouri (CSA) Infantry. He was wounded in the head in July 1863 at Vicksburg and more severely wounded in Atlanta the following year, forcing him from active service. After the war he came to St. Louis to engage in the mercantile business. Charles Rainwater had the honor of leading the Confederate veterans who took part in the funeral procession of General William T. Sherman, who is buried in St. Louis' Calvary Cemetery (Bio by Connie Nisinger).
