Civil War CSA Congressman, Army Officer. After receiving his law degree in Virginia, he moved to St. Louis and began his practice. He was married to Eliza von Phul, daughter of prominent St. Louisan Henry von Phul. During the Secession Crisis, Missouri governor Claiborne Jackson sent him to Richmond as a commissioner to the President of the Confederate States. Elected as a Delegate from Missouri to the Confederate Provisional Congress, serving from 1861 to 1862. Elected as a Representative from Missouri to the Confederate Congress, serving from 1862 until his death in office in 1863; died in office 1863. During the early part of the War he served as a Staff Officer in the Confederate Army with the ran of Colonel, PACS.
