Josiah B. Fox was born in North Carolina, as gathered from Census records. Josiah B. Fox and Elizabeth Hall were married 28 March 1853.Like many people of the time, he felt the need to move his family westward and did so by first living in Indiana. While in Indiana, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War. He enlisted in E Co, Indiana 73rd Infantry Regiment on 16 August 1862 along with his brothers Horace and Louis S. Fox. He mustered out on 27 Feb 1863 in Bowling Green, KY. At some point after the Civil War, he moved his family to Carrigan Township where they settled for a short time before crossing the Mississippi river and permanently settling in Ellington, near what was known as Flatt River.
