According to the 1860 Monroeville Township, Monroeville Post Pffice, Colusa Co., CA, US Federal Census, G.A. lived with his parents, Eugene Alvarez, 42, (who was a farmer) and Julia Alvarez, 33. He was 11 years old making his birth year about 1849. He was born in Missouri. Also in the home was a 10 year old girl, Sally, who was born in California and was listed as a Native American Indian. Another in the home was Nelly Hardin a 1 year old Native American Indian girl.

Keith Lingenfelter states in "Tehama County Pioneers" that Griffin A. Alvarez was murdered in Kanawha, Glenn Co., California on 6 August 1877. Note that Glenn County was not formed from Colusa Co., CA until 1891. Kanawah was a former community located about four miles west of Willows, present day Glenn Co., California.

"August 6, Griff Alvarez killed by George Hilton, in a saloon at Kanawha. The trouble grew out of a game of poker the two men were engaged in playing, just before the shooting." Page 155 states the year was 1877.

Griff's family home is on the National Register of Historic Places in Florissant, Missouri; Casa Alvarez. It was listed on the Register 18 Jun 1976. It was constructed circa 1790. According to its nomination for the Register it "serves as a last link with the Spanish occupation of the Upper Louisiana territory."
