Paxton Record Oct 3, 1918
Clarence (Charles) William Adell was born near Paxton, Dec. 12, 1894, and had lived in this vicinity all his life. On April 4, 1909, he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Paxton and united with the church at that time. Later he transferred his membership to the Presbyterian church at Clarence. Here he had been a faithful attendant for several years. On July 2, 1918, he was united in marriage with Miss Gladys Swanson of Clarence, and 2 days later, July 4, he enlisted in the service of his country. He was sent immediately to Chicago to begin his training at Lewis Institute, and on Sept 13th he, together with the other honor students, was transferred to Madison Barracks, New York. Here he was made master mechanic and assigned to the aerial service signal work, but was not permitted to enter into this work, to which he had looked forward with so much joy, for on Sunday, Sept. 22nd, he was smitten with influenza and sent to the hospital. Pneumonia developed and on Thursday morning, Sept. 26th, he answered roll call and was mustered into the army of the passing before the Great Ruler of the Universe, receiving the commendation of "well done thou good and faithful servant." Clarence was a good young man of exceptional high ideals, devoted to his family and true to his friends. These qualities made of him a true patriot who was willing to sacrifice all if his country might be made safe and the world rid of militarism. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife, parents, two sisters, Mabel of Clarence and Mrs. Emil Johnson of Willmar, MN, three brothers, Edward of Elliott, Albert and Richard of Clarence, together with many relatives and friends.
