Jacob was the eldest child of John Beaver and Elizabeth Bower.

He married Jane Darlington, the eldest child of Wilson Darlington and Mary Barbara Lupfer, on November 6, 1851 in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania. He was the father of four children:

+ Adda
+ Elizabeth
+ Harvey McClure
+ Meredith Darlington

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County on August 5, 1862, and mustered into Federal service at Harrisburg on August 11 as a Private with Company G, 133rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Infantry.

Wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862 (nature of wound not stated), he was immediately hospitalized and then detached to hospital duty to date April 15, 1863, and never returned to active duty. Furloughed home, the Army charged him $4.78 for transportation, and he was honorably discharged on May 26, 1863, the same day as the rest of his Company.

After the war, Jacob moved his family to Paola, Kansas in 1868. His wife, Jane Darlington died there of typhoid fever on September 16, 1869.

He returned to New Bloomfield, where he re-married on March 5, 1872 to Jane Mary Darlington, the eldest child of David Darlington and Margaret Barnett. She was a 1st-cousin of his first wife.

The 1875 Kansas Census shows Jacob back in Paola, working as a blacksmith and living with second wife Jane M., Elizabeth and Meredith. Addie and Harvey had stayed behind in New Bloomfield with their grandparents, Wilson and Mary Darlington.

Jacob worked as a blacksmith and farmer. He was a Republican, and a member of the Methodist Church. He died of cancer at the age of 72.
