NOTE: Warren Frank Anderson probably never had his portrait taken prior to the Civil War and probably never got the opportunity to have his portrait made in uniform during the short time he was in the service. However, Warren survived the war and lived well into the 20th century. During his life, Warren probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would dearly love to see some pictures of Warren added to his Find A Grave Memorial, even ones of him as an old man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

When French had 100 volunteers he led the Princeville volunteers into Peoria where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, French and 95 of his volunteers were mustered into service as Co. K of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. French was elected Captain of Co. K. James Burk Peet was elected 1st Lieutenant by the men of Co. K, while Warren's brother, John, was elected 7th Corporal.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, down to the railroad depot. There they were joined by the men of the 85th Illinois, who had been mustered into service at Camp Peoria. At the depot, the men of the 85th and 86th boarded trains bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana, located across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky. Two weeks later, the men of the 85th & 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing the last Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering the first of many casualties to come. There would be many more in the years to come. After the Union victory at Perryville, the Confederates withdrew from Kentucky and the men of McCook's Brigade began the long march to Nashville, Tennessee, where they went into winter camp.
Of this time, Kinnear in his history of the 86th wrote, "On the morning after the battle our brigade moved forward to the main portion of the battlefield, the enemy having retreated under cover of night, leaving his dead and wounded on the field. The brigade remained in its last position three days, when on the morning of the 12th the army took up the line of pursuit, passing through Danville and Lancaster, and arriving at Crab Orchard on the 16th. The pursuit was now no longer continued, the enemy being allowed to make good his escape with all his forage and plunder."
On or about October 14, 1862, while the men of McCook's Brigade were in the area of Danville, Kentucky, Private Warren Frank Anderson disppeared. Whether he was sick or just sick from what he had been a part of at Perryville, Private Warren Frank Anderson was not to be found. He was officially listed as a Deserter as of October 14, 1862.
As for the rest of his family, Private William Rook is believed to have been left behind sick at Louisville, Kentucky, when the men of McCook's Brigade left the Louisville area. Private Rook was discharged for disability on December 26, 1862. Lt. Peet was discharged for disability on December 24, 1864. John J. Anderson, who was later elected Sergeant, and William P. Pigg, served the remainder of the war with Co. K and were among the 43 men out of the original 96, who were mustered out of the service on June 6, 1865 in Washington City (later D.C.). All five men had survived the war.
Warren apparently returned briefly to Illinois, but he and Esther were soon on their way to Wisconsin. They moved there sometime before 1865. By 1869 they moved to Missouri and then by the summer of 1870 have moved to Kansas.

(Baxter would enjoy hearing from anyone, especially descendants of the Anderson family, who might be able to add to the biographical information that we have on Warren Frank Anderson and the Anderson family. Baxter would also dearly love to see copies of any photographs of Warren Frank Anderson that may have survived the years, added to his Find A Grave site for all to see and for the benefit of the Princeville, Illinois Historical Society, who with Baxter's help are trying to obtain photographs of all members of Co. K of the 86th Illinois.)
