Although she has been in decline for the past decade, Madeline will be remembered as a hard working and socially active woman who played a major role in her church, St. Paul Baptist and in her community. After retiring from her position with the State Of Pennsylvania, she devoted much of her energies to planning and organizing social events for the community. She also loved to travel and frequently organized trips places such as California, Hawaii, and New York City.
Madeline resided with her oldest daughter Dr. Barbara Elizabeth Baton, a prominent Harrisburg Educator until Barbara's death in 1987. Her sorrow at the loss of her daughter was particularly difficult since she had lost her second child Sandra Ann Baton Robinson in 1970 at the early age of 33. In 2000, after several years of decline, she was admitted to Villa Teresa Nursing Home in Harrisburg where she resided until the facility closed in 2005.
Madeline is survived by her daughter, Dr. Maisha Shirley Baton, her granddaughter, Tracy Colleen Baton and her husband Mark Stawson and her great-grand daughters, Nia Madeline, Thandiwe Elizabeth, and Maisha Clare Baton-Stawson of Pittsburgh. She is also survived by her niece Yvonne Mclamb, her nephews Donald Barbour, Dr. Samuel Dismond and Michael Dismond and many great-nieces and nephews. She will be missed.
