The son of Jacob N. & Anna Marie (Schneider) Bentzel [although there is dispute on that], in 1860, he was a farmer living in Adams County. He stood 5' 7" tall and had light hair and gray eyes. He married Catharine Herring August 24, 1862, in Hanover, York County, and fathered Elmer (b. 05/30/63), Anniah M. L. (b. 02/02/65), Lillie A. S. (b. 11/06/67), Emma C. (b. 11/05/70), Martha G. (b. 03/29/73), Nettie Edith (b. 04/08/75), and William E. (b. 04/18/81).

A Civil War veteran, he was was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.

Death came following a stroke he suffered on the square in Hanover. He died later that afternoon either in Dr. Meisenhelder's office or at his home in Union Township, Adams County (both reported).
