A Civil War veteran, he was was drafted in Adams County October 16, 1862, mustered into federal service at Gettysburg November 6 as a private with Co. E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863.
Death came following a stroke he suffered on the square in Hanover. He died later that afternoon either in Dr. Meisenhelder's office or at his home in Union Township, Adams County (both reported).
