Smitty was born a son of the late Helen McKnight and Ronald S. Ross Sr., and was a graduate of Greeleyville High School and Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, N.C. He was retired from the forestry industry after 35 years. Mr. Ross was an Army veteran of the Vietnam war and received the Bronze Star with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters with V Device for heroism. He was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Vietnam Vets of America, ABATE, the Sons of the Confederacy, SCVM, and the Mechanized Cavalry of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Smitty died in a Charleston hospital at age 59.
