Joseph Grayson Deviney Jr. was a resident of Cleveland Co. when he enlisted at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia on 20 June 1863 in Co. B, 49th North Carolina Infantry. He was wounded in the left arm on 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, and was absent recuperating until August 1864. Returning to active duty, he was wounded in the abdomen on 1 Apr 1865 and taken prisoner at Five Forks, Virginia where he was confined until paroled. The 49th North Carolina Infantry was part of Ransom's Brigade throughout the war. The brigade was attached to the Army of Northern Virginia in the early and later months of the Civil War, but for most of the war it was a part of the Army of North Carolina and Southern Virginia.
