Enlisted as a private in Co. A, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, on 14 Aug 1862. Pvt. Hass was captured while a member of a detachment sent on 24 September 1864 to relieve Ft. Henderson in Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry commanded by CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. The detachment was fighting to gain the fort, and within sight of it, when the fort was unexpectedly surrendered. Forrest then forced the relief detachment to surrender as well. He was sent to Cahaba Prison, exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" on 27 April 1865 near Memphis, TN. He was mustered out 20 May 1865.
