Charles Chauncy was baptized in November 1592, in Yardley-Bury Church, Hertfordshire, England. He was the son of George Chauncy and Anne Welsh. He married Catherine Eyre on March 17, 1630. He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and earned a Master of Arts degree in 1617, Bachelor of Divinity in 1624. In 1627, he became Vicar of Ware. He was imprisoned in 1635, and forced to make a recantation because of his Puritan views. He left England in 1637 and arrived in Plymouth, MA. He was a practicing physician as well as minister. In 1654 he was offered the position as the second President of Harvard. All six of his sons were ministers and graduates of Harvard.
