He was a farmer; son of Mumford Blackwell and Mary ann Waters; died of typhoid fever/pneumonia; buried Aug 30, 1915; widowed at the time of his death.

James Mortimer Blackwell was born in Rappahannock Co., VA. on July 25,1846. He was the sixth child of Mumford and Mary Blackwell. In 1857 he moved with his family to Lincoln Co., Missouri. He was about eleven years old at that time.

James M. Blackwell was the owner of a beautiful farm of over 400 acres known as Sunny Slope. The farm was situated on Section 17, Township 17, Pike Co., MO. He made agriculture his principle business in life and dealt extensively with cattle and hogs, buying and feeding them for the markets. For a short time he engaged in the dry goods and grocery business in Cyrene, and in order to give his children better educational advantages he made his home in Bowling Green, MO for a few years.

His first marriage was on November 15, 1871 to Annie Price. They had four children: twin boys who died in infancy, Emma B., and Beatrice. Annie died in 1876 and is buried on the old Blackwell farm with her twin boys. Secondly he married a Louvine Sulenger (Sullinger) on October 17, 1878 she died without issue in March of 1880. His third marriage was on June 10, 1885 to Annie South, widow of Solon H. South and daughter of Harrison Wisdom and Virginia Turner. They had five children: James Kyle, Harry Mumford, Annie May, Champ Clark, and Harry Wisdom. Mrs. Annie Blackwell died on June 21, 1906. She is buried at the Antioch Cemetery in Pike Co., MO.

James M. was a member of the Bowling Green Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Masonic Order at the Cyrene Lodge #14 (now called Eolia Lodge #14 in Eolia, Missouri) in Cyrene, Missouri. He was Initiated 10-29-1884, Passed 11-12-1884, and Raised 1-14-1885. He held office twice, serving as Senior Steward 1886, and Junior Deacon 1887. On 2-2-1915, he transferred his membership to the Phoenix Lodge #136 in Bowling Green. He was a member of the democratic party. James was the administrator of his fathers will. He died on August 29,1915 in Pike Co., MO., at the age of 69. He is buried at the Antioch Cemetery in Pike Co., Missouri.
