Services for George Gaines, 72, of Grapeland, TX, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Grapeland with Allen Sowders officiating. Burial will be at Guiceland Cemetery in Houston County under the direction of Bailey & Foster Funeral Home, Grapeland.
Mr. Gaines died Sunday in a Tyler, TX hospital.
He was born in Houston County on Jan. 31, 1922, to James Hiram and Ola Wells Gaines. He was a farmer and a rancher.
Mr. Gaines seved on the Grapeland School Board, the A.S.C. and P.C.A boards, the Grapeland and Elkhart Co-Op boards, and the Guiceland Cemetery Association Board. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
Mr. Gaines was preceded in death by a son, Michael Steve Gaines, on Sept. 9, 1976; and a sister, Addie Leona Gaines, on Sept. 1, 1936.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Kennedy Gaines of Grapeland; daughter, Annette McElyea of Lovelady; son, Jimmy Gaines of Portland; sisters, Opal Denman of Grapeland, and Billie Sue Owens of Palestine; and five grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be George Bartee, Clyde Beford, John Roberson, Bobby Cunningham, W.D. Smith, and Mitchell Huff.
