Prior to assuming the duties of defense minister he served as a senior military officer with the Soviet Missile Forces and as the commander of the Russian Strategic Missile forces. He became the first Soviet General to be awarded the title of "Marshal of the Russian Federation" following the collapse of the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. He died from cancer at the age of 68.
