Mrs. Cortez, 94, died Wednesday, October 15 2003 at her home.

Mrs. Cortez was born February 11, 1909 in El Mulato, Chihuahua, Mexico; the daughter of Ricardo L. Herrera and Maria R. Saenz Herrera.

On January 17, 1928 she was married to Agapito O. Cortez in Carlsbad, N.M. They came to Artesia in 1934 from Seven Rivers, N.M. Her husband preceded her in death February 21, 1982. She was also preceded in death by sons Alejo Cortez and Alvaro Cortez; by a daughter Mary Moriarty; by sisters Dominga Baiza and Elisa Robledo; and by a brother Gilbert Herrera.

She was a housewife and member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Survivors include sons Manuel H. Cortez and wife Dolores of Carlsbad, Felipe H. Cortez and wife Nila of El Paso, Texas, Antonio H. Cortez and Guadalupe H. Cortez and wife Viola all of Albuquerque, N.M., Jose H. Cortez of Artesia, and J. V. Garcia and wife Betty of Tijeras, N.M.; daughters Margaret H. Cortez, Rita C. Villa and husband Tony, and Helen H. Cortez all of Albuquerque, and Sally H. Cortez of Glendale, Ariz.; 26 grandchildren; and 34 great-grand-children.
