Wed to Bettie Allen Freeman.
Douglas Southall Freeman, famed author and historian, was their son. Walker Burford Freeman was elected Commander in Chief of the United Confederate Veterans, serving from 1925-1926. After his term he was bestowed the title of "Honarary" Commmander in Chief", until his death.
W.B. Freeman wrote this about the defense of Petersburg:
"We had practically nothing to eat, almost no water to drink, and no sleep at all except such little as we could snatch from the few intervals of calm. It had been a time that called for every ounce of endurance there was in us. But the boys during all the weary hours of suffering with hunger and thirst did not complain. Our casualties were not heavy for such a tremendous amount of real fighting. The old earthworks, though very poor protection, saved many of us. We could lie flat down to load our rifles and then quickly rise and give it to the bluecoats."
