Colorado Pioneer. Daniel married Olive Maria (Martin) on July 3, 1853, in Scott Co, Iowa. They had 8 daughters. Oakes was one of the first prospectors in the early days of the Pikes Peak gold rush and published a guidebook to the region, which lured thousands in the spring of 1859 to seek their fortune. He later operated a successful lumber business and helped negotiate a peace treaty between the federal government and the Ute Indian tribe.
