Henry John Shuda, 83, rural Rice Lake, Wis., died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2006, at his home.
He was born Nov. 26, 1922, to John and Katherine (Maczka) Siuda at Barron. The family lived on the home farm in rural Rice Lake, and Henry was baptized at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, Town of Strickland.
The family left the farm in about 1926 and moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where Henry attended kindergarten. He also received first communion and confirmation at All Saints Church there.
In 1935, during the depression, the family returned to the farm. Henry attended school and graduated from Cameron High School in 1942. He had taken concertina lessons, and throughout high school he played in a band called "The Sodbusters".
He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and was stationed in Saipan. After his discharge from military service, he returned to the family farm. In 1947, he organized "Henry Shuda and his Orchestra", and they played together until 1958.
On Aug. 3, 1948, he married Leona Fritz at Rice Lake. In 1955, he sought employment off the farm, and the following year he went to work for Paul's Sheet Metal, Rice Lake, where he was a roofer for the next 30 years.
In 1970, Henry returned to his music. He enjoyed playing polka music and played for many church activities until just a few years ago.
He was also a very passionate and dedicated member of his church in Strickland and served in many different capacities over the years.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years are sons, Michael of Arcadia, Patrick (Debbie) of Wisconsin Rapids and Mark (Marsha) of Cincinnati, Ohio; daughters, Mary Shuda of Rice Lake and Ann Bernadette (Daniel) Jennerman of Birchwood; grandchildren, Michael Japheth Shuda, Cynthia (Tony) Shepherd, Daniel (Renae) Jennerman, Jacob Jennerman and Nathaniel and Caitlin Shuda; sisters, Genevieve (George) Letness of Minneapolis, Henrietta (Ervin) Nelson of Minong and RoseMary Shuda of Minneapolis; as well as three generations of nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, from Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, with Father Jozef A. Barszcz officiating and interment with military honors at the church cemetery.
