City Commemorates First Free School, Pays Tribute to Pioneer Educators at D. U. P. Monument Unveiling Ceremony
. . . Inscribed on the bronze plaque is the following historical note:
The territorial legislature, February, 1866, authorized the levy of a tax for the support of schools within each district. Pursuant to this act, Mayor Leonard E Harrington called a meeting and the majority of the citizens of American Fork approved the plan. School opened in November in 1867, with Joseph B Forbes, E A Henriod, Editha Anderson and Elizabeth G Griffin, teachers, . . ..
