Ben Clayton, a resident of Adel the past 30 years, died the morning of his 68th wedding anniversary, Oct. 8, 1981, at West Park Care Center in West Des Moines. He was 83.
A funeral was held Oct. 10 at United Methodist Church in Adel, with burial at Clayton Cemetery in Van Mete.r
Clayton was born April 5, 1888 in Van Meter to Henry and Sarah Jane (Roberts) Clayton. He was married to Maude M. Sheets, Oct. 8, 1913 in Adel.
He farmed near Van Meter until he retired to Adel in 1951. He is survived by his wife, Maude; one daughter, Nelda Hazen of Des Moines; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and two brothers, John and Ray.
Clayton was a lifetime member of United Methodist Church in Van Meter and Adel. He attended school in Van Meter.
