In the winter of 1861-1862 over 300 Confederate Soldiers died of measles, typhoid fever, pneumonia and other diseases at Camp Alcorn in Hopkinsville. Some of the dead were taken home by relatives; however, approximately 293 men remained and were buried here.

In 1887, the remains of some of these men were reinterred under the Confederate Monument located 550 ft. northwest of here. The sandstone monolith and these 293 granite tombstones were erected in the fall of 2001 by the Jefferson Davis Camp #1675, Sons of Confederate Veterans.
