Carol Ann Carson-Denny, age 65, of Pharr, Texas, died at her home of ovarian cancer Sept. 10, 2006.
She was born Sept. 19, 1940, in Helena. She relocated to Eureka, Calif., in 1976 where she owned a coffee shop, clothing store, and was employed as an office manager for a local nursing home. She retired in Pharr in November 2004.
Carol enjoyed her grandchildren, reading, sewing machine embroidery, knitting, crocheting and traveling. She graduated from College of the Redwoods- Eureka in 1986. She was working on her degree in business at Humboldt State University before her retirement. Carol and her husband celebrated 31 years of marriage on June 28, 2006.
Carol is survived by her husband, Dean Denny; daughters and their husbands, Cindy Heller-Chandler and Jon, Spokane, Wash.; Linda Heller-Mason and Dave, Helena; Robyn Houtchens-Buckley, Lynwood, Wash.; Cheryl Houtchens-Robblee and Paco, Fort Bragg, Calif.; and Crystal Houtchens-Saltel and Joe, Pharr; stepdaughters, Donna Denny-Rock and Robert, West Jordon, Utah; Judy Denny-Bodey and Mike, Latah, Wash.; and Kathy Denny-Fornaciari and Mike, Junction City, Calif.; sisters, Carmen Elmore-Terpin and Damian, Lakewood, Colo.; Bettina Carson, Tacoma, Wash.; and brother, James Bailey, Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and 11 great-step-grandchildren; nine nieces and nephews, and 16 great-nephews and nieces, and her aunt Mary Dean Carson-Stocking of Kalispell.
Her parents, Theodore Carson and Ann Joynt-Bailey; her granddaughter, Aimee Sarbu; son-in-law, Steve Sarbu; two husbands, Patrick Heller and LaVerne Houtchens; aunts, Faye Carson-Kramer and Eva Mea Carson-Wirth; uncles, Bill Carson and Thomas "Tink" Carson, preceded her in death.
Carol spent her life thinking of others and has willed her body to the Texas A&M University Health Science Center's College of Medicine, College Station, Texas. She will be cremated later and buried in the college cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, Carol requested that donations be made in her name to the following organizations that assisted her with love and dignity during her illness: Criterion Health Care, Inc., 1022 E. Griffin Parkway #106, Mission, TX 78572; and Odyssey Health Care of South Texas, 2501 Paredes Line Road Suite B-9, Brownsville, TX 78526.
Her legacy is that every woman be tested for ovarian cancer yearly by one or all of the following diagnostic tests: pap smear, pelvic exam, transvaginal ultrasound, color-flow Doppler ultrasound, CA-125 blood marker test, or exploratory laparotomy. She wanted women to know that ovarian cancer is a very aggressive cancer and exams are needed yearly for early detection.
"And now you shall go out with joy and be led forth in peace. The mountains and the hills before shall break forth into singing and all the trees of the fields shall clap their hands." Isaiah 55:12.
